"They want to make the streets safe. Safe from whom?"
Sub Zero is a new British digital feature film that takes gritty realism and social issues and hacks into the conspiracy thriller genre creating an exciting and original new story.
When Zero Tolerance and fear of the 'anti social' are taken to their logical conclusion, men like Ronnie Lord will be listened to and voted into positions of power for their own and other people’s profit.
The film is a 'right here, right now' British thriller, set against the back drop of a contemporary Middlesbrough, where the all too real lives of the people of Grangetown clash with the kind of politics and 'big business' that would love to rule over them. A 'State of the Nation' drama that unfolds within Teesside's industrial and council estate landscape and draws Carl and Sabrina [A Romeo and Juliet for the Anti- Social Age] into the bowels of its conspiracy. It’s a thriller, a love story and a document of life and what it offers to young people in the urban North East of the 21st Century.
Over the project’s development "Sub Zero" has help create a group of 30 young participants who have worked with drama facilitators and writers in developing key skills in film.
The area is effected by a range of social and economic problems and is one of England's most deprived wards yet the group has continued to grow and develop with many of the cast using it as a platform to study performing arts at local colleges.
'Sub Zero' is a feature film that was produced within the confines of a community film project.
This film was made to realise the vision of a young drama group from Grangetown in Middlesborough (one of the most deprived wards in the UK) reacting to the claustrophobic circumstances surrounding their everyday lives and to tap into the paranoia of a surveillance-driven and controlling state.
With the exception of a select few adult performers, the principle cast had little or no professional film experience and the project helped to develop key drama and film skills.
The film was premiered at Cineworld Cinemas in Middlesborough followed by a successful limited theatrical release nationwide.
